Brian Friel always manages to get that balance between drama and comedy and this, of course, is one of his classics. If I were critiquing how another player role-played, then perhaps a literary or dramatic starting point would be more appropriate. While I'm unaware of any special critical aesthetic geared towards this particular type of creation, wouldn't Drama solve a lot of Film v. I did look at drama theory, especially as there is a book (Janet Murray's "Hamlet on the Holodeck") that explicitly links drama and virtual worlds. I felt that film was closer to virtual world development than (stage) drama because of the lack of dialogue between performers and audience. Drama has been studied for thousands of years and comes with a lot of baggage. This isn't to say that drama isn't a good basis for a critical aestheticm of course.
